We just got a new puppy. The animal shelter said he was a coonhound mix, but he sure doesn't look like it. Does anyone know a website to look up dogs by site? I tried the AKC but no help there.

For people that think the coonhound is not a breed, you are very WRONG! There was one in the hound class last night at Westminster. I am sending you a link to the dog show. Flip through it and maybe you will find your particular pup!
The Black & Tan Coonhounds are beautiful dogs. They have really long ears and are supposed to be very intelligent. Good luck with your pup and thanks for rescuing him from a shelter.

Try your local bookstore. There are numerous books of dog breeds with lots of pictures you can use for compariason; many shelters and vet offices have similar books on hand. You could also try Googling 'AKC breed pictures' or 'dog breed pictures' or 'coonhound pictures.' There are too many sites to list here but www.dogchannel.com is one of the easier ones to use. Bear in mind that you can only determine what breed(s) your dog *looks* like, but you can't tell with certainty what it *is* without knowing its ancestry.

Sometimes it is very hard to figure out what breed your dog is when you get it from a shelter. The shelter where I got my dog told me she was a lab / spaniel mix. She has NO characteristics of either a lab or spaniel. I did research on different dog breeds. I read about their personality traits and looked at a lot of pictures. I still have no idea what breed she is. It's possible that your dog is a mix of several different kinds of dogs. Go to the bookstore or your local library and look at breed books. There are a ton of websites that can be helpful too!

You could try asking a veterinarian, or if possible post a picture in you question. Also, I have seen basset hound/lab mixes that look kind of like a coonhound mix except it didn't have the long ears.

There is now a DNA test for dogs...costs about $50...the guy that was interviewed on the news said that they can detect 38 breeds so far...if you really want to know, I'd spring for the $$ to find out! I'm sorry I don't have the web address for the doggy DNA tests...Google it...I'm sure you'll find it....
I JUST saw this on the news a couple of days ago....
Yes..I saw it myself....and it was REALLY a company doing this....

Your vet may be able to help indetermining what breed charateristics your new pup has. Its also fun if you can post a picture and have others here to try to help determine what ancestry the dog has. Unless you know who the parents are, there will be no 100% way of knowing.

Take it to a vet. Always always after adopting an animal take it to a vet for a check up. sometimes vets do more examining then shelters, and they could tell you a good idea of a breed.

I can tell you one thing, coonhound mixes will NOT be listed on AKC. A coon hound is an interbreeding of a raccoon and a hound such as a bassett. Its actually kind of against nature, but it is genetically possible.
