We need a system of buses where the buses pass more often (not just every 30 - 60 minutes). In other countries, the buses pass every 5 minutes, so you're always on the go and getting to your destination sooner.
Our metro system is ineffective because they do not lead easily to getting to areas even 3 miles from metro stops...there should be some trolley or shuttle system associated with the metros to take people to other convenient bus stops/stations. Additionally, our metro stops service at 12:30 AM, (yes, even on weekends) - now how are we supposed to use that for going out and avoiding drunk driving or drunk drivers?
Not enough people ride bikes and motorcycles because drivers are crazy and it's too dangerous. Besides that, our transportation authority doesn't invest money in making roads safer for bicyclists and motorcyle riders.
We need to institute a double-decker system, and we should also start charging a 'Just moved to Los Angeles' tax...your first three years you have to pay an extra couple hundred dollars so we can improve our transportation system.

I can do nothing but agree with you. In the early 1950's LA decided that the car was the way to commute and designed an extensive freeway system to encourage it. However the population growth has exceeded the freeway improvements and the bus and rail systems were thrown in at a time that the crisis was well underway. The total lack of urban planning in Southern California has led to difficult routes for rail systems (hills separate almost all the parts of the city), and the bus system is competing with space with the cars and the end result is chaos.

50 years ago LA had a great system. There were trains (red cars) traveling over right of ways all over the city. The automobile industry managed to get rid of the system and it took another 40 years until a new rapid transit system was begun.

There is a sort of "buses are for poor folks" mentality out here. Cars are relatively cheap, and when I started driving, I bought a car for $35. and gas was less than .20 cents per gallon.
Things are slowly changing, but it's true what you say: too little too late.

Every one in LA is too worried about their public image. They think they'll look poor taking public transportation. They also want to show off their expensive cars.
