heat pump to house subjected to ice storm exterior is covered with ice (approx. 80%) I don't want it to get worse due to similar problem a couple of years ago which resulted in replacement of heat pump. Do I need to defrost? Or do I ignore and hope for the best. I have heard to either set to emergency heat mode or to set to cool. Any answers out there?

Setting it to cool will transfer heat from inside to outside. That will warm up the unit outside. But inside will get pretty cold.

My first instinct was to say "reverse the heat pump." That basically is setting your thermostat to cool, so I'd agree with everyone else on this one. :)

Sounds like your thermostat is playing up. Set to cool
