I had a microsoft excel file saved with lots of information on it, but information was deleted by mistake then saved, is it possible to retrieve the earlier version

Vista has "Restore previous version"

Excel can be set up to save versions of files, but by default this is turned off, so probably not.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, even if the new version was saved to different sections of the disc than the old one, you would need some very specialised - almost forensic - software to examine each individual section of the disc to retrieve the data and rebuild the file.
