IF chlorine was unhealthy it would not be used to treat water for recreational purposes.
Your average Backyard inground pool has anywhere from 25 to 30 thousand gallons of water.
If you use 3 pounds of Granular form clhorine, and pour it in, the actual content is so miniscule that a gallon of Bleach Granular Chlorine is Calcium Hypochlorite, While Bleach, or Liquid Chlorine is Sodium Hypochlorite
ITs a bit confusing, But Chlorine in such a diluted state is Very harmless.
A common misconception is when you get into a pool and you smell chlorine in the water Alot of times, that is the result of the Chlorine Level being too low when you can "smell" it while in the water. Its the Total amount of Free Chlorine available in the water being too low. this is a result of Sweat, and other bodily fluids entering the water from Human Sources, among other things. These are called Chloramines.
At an indoor Pool, that unmistakeable smell is also Chloramines that have seeped into the Woodwork, and any other pourous material that might enclose the pool. It is not too much chlorine, or a harmful amount of chlorine as you might fear, But the result of chloramines being trapped in a closed environment. Most Indoor Pools, such as a Hotel, or any other public place, with an indoor pool you will probably smell this. IT is perfectly safe, and depending on where you live, there are strict rules pertaining to the Pool owners to maintain records of the Swimming pool PH and Chlorine Readings per the Board of Health.
Hope this information helps you.

The chlorine is basically the same as drinking water chlorine. It won't harm you unless you add too much to the pool. Then it can burn the eyes and irritate the skin.
