Why compare atrocities?

As somebody else said, why compare atrocities? I suppose you could do the math on the respective body counts - if the numbers were available in the mythological case of Herod - but what the hell would that prove? Who was "worse," Hitler or Stalin? It's like asking whether you'd prefer to be burned at the stake or drawn and quartered.

Incidentally, though, the story of Herod's massacre of the innocents was only inserted into Matthew's account because he was trying to show how the life of Jesus symbolically recapitulated the history of the Hebrews. It was a retelling of Pharaoh's slaughter of the Hebrew firstborn on the birth of Moses. Joseph and Mary fled into Egypt with Jesus to escape the Jewish King Herod's judgement, just as Moses' mother, upon hearing of Pharaoh's decree, placed him among the reeds in the Nile to be found by Pharaoh's daughter. That Herod's massacre is pure mythology is bourne out by the fact that absolutely no records of it exist anywhere outside of Matthew's gospel. Hard to imagine that such an episode would fail to provoke comment!

Maybe they were related.

Historically, Saddam was much worse.
Many Historians think that Herod was a Great king and got a bad rap from the Jews because he kissed up to Rome.

King Herod, Saddam, Hitler, GW Jr. honestly there are too many nasty rulers in our history. A shorter list would be of the great peace keepers in our history.

Since there isn't any historical evidence of the so-called 'Slaughter of Innocents', I'd have to say Saddam is worse.

We have more than enough proof that Saddam did participate in atrocities of which he is accused.
