I do not want information on how to reformat computer. I want detailed information on how to completely erase all data on computer so it cannot be recovered. According to the Guardian hard drive data is a major privacy and more should be done to erase data. i.e we would not throw away our bank statements without destroying the valuable information

Best way is to take out the hard drive, hit it (hard drive) with a sledge hammer, run a very heavy duty magnet over it, then incinerate it. A bit drastic, but as far as I know there is no safer way.

first thing i would do is go to superantispyware and download the free edition. once it's downloaded run a complete scan on your computer this program picks up everything and gets it out of there. i had to do this with a friends computer that was totally loaded with trojan horse viruses and it worked like a charm. wiping the hard drive is always a last resort! as for AVG that program it's self is a virus ( it self installed on one of my other computers) try something like norton if you want really good virus protection. or you could just keep the super anti spyware and run it once a week to keep you computer clean!

Darik's Boot and Nuke dban.sourceforge.net
Burn it to CD, boot from the CD, and choose AUTONUKE.
WARNING: This will destroy any data on any hard drives connected to the computer, so be sure you don't make a mistake. DBAN uses DOD-standard algorithm's. There are a handful of forensics experts who might still be able to recover something, but generally speaking its irrecoverable. The only thing 100% secure is physically destroying the drive.
