Islamabad, Jan 23 (IANS) The spring festival of Basant has once again come under a cloud with the Pakistan Supreme Court disallowing kite flying, an integral part of the celebration, on grounds of safety.

The Supreme Court Monday rejected a Punjab government plea seeking permission for kite flying in the province, taking a dim view of announcements and preparations made despite the ban.

What began as a matter of concern for the safety of those who fly kites from rooftops and other risky places and as a hazard caused by the use of wire instead of traditional string has escalated into a politico-legal issue.

A large number of deaths caused by falling off rooftops while flying kites are reported each year. The use of use of wire also disrupts power supply and is known to slit throats of people, particularly children.

Technically I believe it is banned here in Brazil also, because of the glass that they put on the string to fight the kites. It is amazingly sharp, and can cut people's throats if they catch it in the throat going by on a motorcycle or even a bicycle. A lot of the motorcycles use a long piece of metal in the front, or a big antena on the front of the motorcycle, to protect themselves from the kite string. The kite string also cuts phone lines and even power lines, so causes a lot of damage every year. Even though it is technically illegal, I think that they have given up on ever trying to enforce the law here anyway, because everyone does it.

Not islamic states, the word you are looking for is 'asian countries'. This does not have anything to do with religion.

The kite thread is smoothened with powdered glass (that makes the thread lighter) This also makes the thread really sharp. (You know how sometimes even paper edge can cut your skin?)

In some cities, kite-flying has caused accidents among motorists, due to which it has been banned. For instance in some states in India and Pakistan, kite-flying is banned and you can be fined or even put behind bars.

because kids go out on the roofs to fly kites and many fall. its not an islamic reason. in pakistan they like to fly kites during spring its like this festival called bassant but they had to stop that because so many children would fall.
oh and the string had pieces of glass in it and somehow a guy injured his neck very badly

Nothing to do with Islam, sir.If the kite flying is done with harmful threads and wires resulting in splitting of throats, it is prohibited.Should it not be?Do you know that kite flying with dangerous threads have resulted in killing of scores of people in Pakistan. It is almost as ruthless as young camel jockeys.

well it is quite understandable to consider this as a waste of time and money. In some places they use crushed glass mixed in the cord for the kites, this cord slahes the necks and some of these kite lover places experience lots of unfortunate deathe every year. waste of time, waste of money, waste of life are all not appreciated by Islam and actually any culture or religion, peace

Pakistan banned kites last year, but that's because the string was sharpened with ground glass and it killed several people.
