There are two types of Co-codamol - 8/500 and 30/500.
The numbers represent the quantity of codiene phosphate / paracetamol. Therefore there is the same amount of paracetamol in one tablet of each (500mg).

I believe that you can buy "over the counter" cocodamol from a pharmacist but only in the 8/500 strength.

The 30/500 is only available as a prescription from a doctor and is a stronger painkiller because of the higher codiene content. It however causes more opiate related side effects (dizziness, nausea and sickness, constipation) hence why the need for it to be prescribed.

Dont take more than the recommended daily amount (8 tablets in 24 hours split evenly into 4 doses - ie 2 tablets Four times a day) - The risk is from the paracetamol content which if taken in overdose can cause liver impairment and at worse liver failure and death.

Paracetamol and Ibuprofen taken regularly has good analgesic effect for most pains. Add Buscopan (Hyoscine - available over the counter) for pain which spasms (is spasmodic).

Finally to answer your question - The higher strength cocodamol is only available via your GP (first point of call) or A+E (don't attend here first unless emergency - they will only give a limited supply, if any, and tell you to go to see your GP for repeat prescription).

Personally, I woundn't use internet to buy tablets - who knows what you're getting - You have only one body to play with :)

As far as I know niether is addictive infact you can buy similar over the counter now. I have volterol (diclofenac) for joint pain and I find that works better than either of the others but it is an Nsaid which is linked to heart problems. It was Coproxamol that was withdrawn because of addiction problems.

Why take a drug when a food will do?
Sorry, if the Dr. has prescribed a drug for a particular reason, then I will not interfere in that......but if you are taking it as a painkiller then Mangosteen juice is much gentler on the stomach lining and kills pain too!

You should be able to get either of them over the counter at a chemist.
