I've got a peach faced lovebird. Currently he's not very friendly and is extremely nippy. I think his favorite game is lets decapitate mommy's hand! I know that with lots of effort he can become a great pet. But how long was it before your bird finally took to you? and became the friendly loving animals we all know they can be?

Well lovies can be tough, they're little balls of attitude lol. How long it takes will also greatly depend on how old he is. But it CAN be done. They are very social creatures and they WANT to be with you, even if they don't know it yet. Work with him in a small quiet place where he can not see his cage. Offer him treats you know he loves, offer them from your hand. Let him stand on a perch or T-stand if he prefers that. If you are gentle with him and NEVER grab him he will come around, it just takes time.

Ohhh does that being back nightmares....

I am a canary person, and I had two canries which I loved, I decided to get another one.

WRONG MOVE.

The new one I got, which I named Will, the first day, nearly shredded my finger, bullied the other birds, and made horrible sounds banging his wings against the perches.

On about the third day he no longer bit me, but bullied the other birds, and was still making weird sounds.

A few weeks after I got him, he had greatly improved and didn't bite, bully, or make banging noises, but acted shy and distant, and was very unresponsive.

I took him to a bird psychologist (YES THEY EXIST) and Will was diagnosed with a sort of disorder that runs in birds (I forget the name) and the guy also told me he would get over it soon, once he got more adjusted.

He was right.

I say you bird will get better when he/she gets adjusted and feels more comfortable.

You are right, they can be friendly animals, so keep putting up with your bird a little longer and I'm sure he'll adjust.

Best of Luck to you and your lovebird...(AND HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!)

I imprinted my Saker Falcon from being a baby, He used to sit on my chest while i watched telly so he's adored me from the very begining.
Sometimes you get birds that instantly take a shine to you, sometimes you get a bird the hates you for no aparent reason. We have a Golden Eagle that has tried to attack me and would atempt to kill me if he could. And I have never done anything to him.
It can take any amount of time to get a bird to like you, it's all down to how much the bird trusts you. If he doesn't trust you he wont like you.
