It seems to me that the poor in America have only two options drug dealing or the army and in both jobs people try to kill you.

No it is far more effective to use Racism to devide and conquer them to get them to vote against their own best interests by gutting social welfare programs.

America isn't forcing anyone to do ANYTHING be it DRUGS and dealing drugs, to going to war.

America's poor are now only poor because we have too much POLITICAL CORRECTNESS in America, giving away jobs overseas by big CEO's of major corporations to everyone who owns a company and is trying to save money hiring people who cannot speak the language or is illegal.

People don't have to deal drugs. That's an EXCUSE to make big money fast. Free education is available for the poor. I know, I was 53 years old when I applied for my Pell Grants to go back to school. There are no excuses good enough here...except that the free trade agreements with other countries are making the employment market STINK.

I was forced to take a cleaning position, part time, just to buy food. I don't suck off the system. Even though I've had years of experience in retail, management and offices...I'm STUCK in this position after sending out over 950 resumes. But I keep on hoping and praying that soon someone will realize my qualities and give me an interview.

There are choices out here and if someone choose to join the military, they should do it with a sense of honor and duty...not because they can't find a job. There are federal grants available for people who want to start their own business. The key is to find one that is unique and not as competitive right now. There's always hope and always an answer.

When America had the draft your point was valid. I served in the Army during the Viet Nam era and most of the draftees were from middle class to poor families----the wealthy were able to dodge the draft by going to college or Canada. During the modern volunteer Army, however, the job has become so technical that undereducated people cannot make it. We are loosing, therefore, some of our best and brightest in two pointless wars. The military has always been a way out for the poor and I think that that is a good thing. AS a man I believe that every young man that is able-bodied should serve his country. the military is a character building experience that you cannot get anywhere else.

OK attic girl !!! they have more options than that ! they don't have to sell drugs. they can pick in the fields. wash dish's. apply for jobs with the county. be a painter, or carpenter. they can enter into any of the services. but to become a white collar worker or president it almost impossible, unless they have the drive, motivation and the education. The army don't want any one who doesn't have a high school grad certificate or equvelent. The Army is ALL volunteer. To save on wlefare you have to be kidding! from the north to the south they come, and beyond. not just here in the u.s.a. NO THEY DONT FORCE , the poor people.

The majority fo the army are not froma poor background despite popular beliefe, the army does hoever have a lot of incentives to join such as housing, food, money etc. This is america, the poor have an oppertunity equal to anyone else, most of the super rich people in america started out relitavely impoverished. The army is a quick way out though and is good because it gives work experience. The standards are strict though, no cirminal offenses or drugs and they can get in but otherwise probably not.
No one is forcing them to join or to sell drugs, the only thing america is doing is giving them options, it is ultimately the eprson decision which they choose.

Hmmmm, I've been in the military for over 26 years, I own my home (its paid for), I own a beach cottage not far away, (its almost paid for), 2 almost new vehicles (1 is a 2005, the other is a 2001) I've put 2 kids thru college, and later this year I'm going back to college myself!
And to think, all this time I was poor, stupid and couldn't do anything else but be a "crack" dealer. Geeeeesh, I guess I should have been a whinney Democrat, my life might have been better?

The reason that it seems to you that the poor in America have only two options is because you are an idiot.

Have you ever heard of Oprah Winfrey? Born dirt poor and abused as a child, now she is a self-made gazillionaire and an outstanding businesswoman.

What about Condoleeza Rice? Born dirt poor, now she speaks six languages, was a concert pianist, is the former president of Stanford University, and is the current US Secretary of State.

Didn't even realize it, but those both happen to be black females so they had the supposed disadvantage of being "double minorities." They aren't alone. If you work hard and don't quit, you can succeed in America no matter what.

Did your school run out of money for qualified teachers? or was your school run and taught by imbeciles?

Because I would imagine by your question and follow up, that you were not schooled in a even the most remedial of schools.

If you happened to actually look in to the military your going to find the average person is actually middle class and in the officer ranks many are what would be considered "rich".

Yes there are poor people, your going to find every walk of life in the military as well.

But you keep listening to that asinine drivel you hear in music and from your local far loony left leaders in your land of ignorance and putrid bile. The rest of us kind like it in the real world with real facts and we would appreciate it if you would actually use them before shooting your mouth off about something you obviously and painfully know nothing about.

Here get educated...

Now look at the part called "Household Income of Recruits".

See these are called FACTS... Can you say "facts" I know you can...

hmmm Interesting the study shows the poor are under represented... That means there are less percent wise in the military vs. the total actually percent in the US...

Wow, we learned something today huh?

Look it has pictures too! Wow it's your day isn't it?

Next time look it up. Then comment... Till then, thanks for wasting bandwith, the 2 points and please think before you spew out far left wing ignorant garbage.

Get a grip and quit buying into The Liberal Propaganda Machine, most soldiers in the Army are whites from middle class families...there was a study done by Army Times (Is not a Army paper) which states this...I will not give a link because you have to pay to see the info since it is a private paper....I spent 14 years in the Army and most of the people were from middle class families...there were some poor people, but not many...

How are the poor forced into war? Most of the military is middle class, it's a volunteer army. Check your sources if you ever had any. Many educational options are out there, more now than ever was. Your question is pointless and misinformed.

What a victim comment, probably coming from a UCLA student living in an apartment paid for by her parents. She really understands the plight of Americas poor. As far as forced into.....Drug dealing or Military service. Our military is entirely volunteer. And if someone that happens to be poor and sees at as a way to make money for college. Good for them. It's an honor to serve your country.
