For me, I interprete it to mean that even though you dream of trying new things, you are to affraid to do so. Instead you choose the safe, the comfortable, the known. In a negative sense "Better the devil you know, than the one you don't"

I think it means that he/she thought about all of the things that were possible for he/she to do, and in the end decided to continue on with life as it was. Whether it be out of lathargy, cowardice, or contentment.
