That's dogs! They really like to lick, but if it starts to get annoying, when she starts to lick again close her mouth(be careful of her tongue!) and say no. After doing that every time she starts to lick try to only say no. If she doesn't listen to "no" keep doing the same thing as before, eventually she'll realize (just like a command) that she's doing the wrong thing when you say "no."

If she is licking you, she is probably just being friendly or submissive and acknowledging you as the alpha (leader). If she licks herself a lot, she could have skin problems (dry skin, eczema, etc.) If you got her from a breeder, you could try contacting your breeder to find out if any litter mates or parents have the same behavior. If it is herself and not you she is licking, I would take her to the vet to rule out skin problems. As far as if it is a Shih Tzu thing to lick, I have no idea as I have never had one. Good luck!

First of all the proper name is Shih Tzu. I do wish that people who own a Shih Tzu would learn to spell it.
A Shih Tzu is the friendliest dog you will ever run across they know no stranger. They greet people as their long lost friend. That is the nature of these wonderful dogs. These dogs were breed to love and be love. Do her right and learn to spell her breed name. I am a breeder of Shih Tzu and they all live in my home. They are part of my family and after they greet you ...you never need a bath.

My poodle licks herself all the time and it's because she has allergies. I have to give her children's allergy medicine twice a day...if your dog is licking you she just loves you!

My parents have a Norwich Terrier and she has the same problem. Check and see if she has a under bite if she does that is why she does it. It helps sooth her teeth. That is what our vet told us and she has never stopped.
