It doesnt make any sense...is it a symptom of the episode?

How you know you're having a Major Depressive Episode? A doctor will have to diagnose that. If you have felt this way almost everyday for more than a month, please tell a psychiatrist how you feel; if you don't know how to find a psychiatrist tell any medical doctor.

Yes, being depressed could make everything look negative to the depressed person. I don't see why it couldn't make somebody think bad things are going to happen in the future--if everything is crappy now, why wouldn't it be crappy later on?

I have diagnoses of Major Depression, and Dysthymic Disorder (some psychatrist call that "double depression") and I work in a mental health agency. I think all kinds of bad thoughts when I'm off my medication. I used to hate it when people would say to me "think positive." Well, that's exactly what clinical depression is, an inability to think positive--they might as well have told me "grow wings and fly." Most people probably don't understand that depression can be a very real illness.

I have been feeling the same over the last 3 months following a big move. It seems to get terrible before my period to the point where I feel suicidal. You should go and speak to your doctor and see what he has to offer. When you mention depression to a doctor they seem to suggest anti-depressants. I have tried them before and I feel they made me worse, but is not the same case for everyone. You should tell the doctor you feel nervous/paranoid and perhaps seeing a counsellor would help. I have used a counsellor in the past, for a total of nine months. It was certainly worth it. Sometimes when you dont have the strength to pick yourself up, you need help from others. If you dont fancy seeing the doctor, you could look for help online and check out some of the herbal remedies.

Sometimes when you feel depressed, you will so low that you expect bad things to happen.

Honestly, I suggest seeing the doctor and ask about the possibility of seeing a counsellor. Especially if you feel nervous about going out or even feel suicidal. There are plenty of people out there to help.

I hope you can pull through it.

I used to get terrible episodes like that too. I was later diagnosed as being bi-polar. The first thing that you need to understand is that yes it is a symptom of the episode. What is going on in your head is a chemical imbalance and has nothing to do with the outside world. Knowing that it IS all in your head is not enough to make it stop (I know this); you need to see a professional. You might be uncomfortable about it at first, but you will be thankful later on. NOTHING BAD IS GOING TO HAPPEN! Don't Worry.

Yes, it is a symptom of the depressive episode. You are not in any more danger than any other time. Get some help to relieve the episode and when it is gone, these feelings of imminent doom will be gone as well.

This is a physiological state of your brain. Take a deep breath and try to convince yourself that it's nothing but your brain playing tricks on you. Get out of the house, walk or jog for a while, get busy doing something that will make you forget what you're feeling now. Good luck.

It sounds like you might be experiencing a panic attack. Panic attacks often occur in people going through depressive episodes.

When a panic attack occurs, you suddenly feel intensely fearful or uncomfortable, and experience symptoms like rapid heart rate or palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, choking sensation, chest pain, nausea or upset stomach, dizziness or lightheadedness, feeling like things aren't really happening or like you're floating outside of your body, fear of losing control or going crazy, fear of dying, numbness or tingling in your face or body, and chills or hot flashes. The symptoms occur abruptly and reach a peak within about 10 minutes.

Talk to your doctor about whether or not you might be getting panic attacks. Because the symptoms are so physical, it is a good idea to rule out any medical conditions before diagnosing panic. Your doctor will then prescribe treatment for depression with panic attacks. A lot of antidepressant medications actually help to reduce panic attacks, so that may be one course of action.

Another course of action is therapy. A therapist (psychologist, psychiatrist, social worker, etc.) can help you identify and manage your panic symptoms, so they won't be as scary or disturbing.

I am sorry that you are experiencing a major depressive episode. I had major depression in the past, and I know what you're going through. I did therapy and that didn't really help.

Please read Richard Carlson's book "You Can Be Happy No Matter What." His basic premise is what you think about affects your feelings in the moment which affects your mood, i.e., thinking negative thoughts leads to negative feelings in the moment which leads to negative moods (depression). Then your negative mood affects your feelings in the moment and affects your thinking so you start thinking more negative thoughts. It becomes a vicious circle.

The reverse of that is also true. Thinking positive thoughts leads to positive feelings in the moment which leads to positive moods.

It's not POSITIVE thinking its thinking positive thoughts. When I feel depressed I deliberately think of something I like. I don't try to think positively just focus on something I like.

For example, I like the novels of Nelson DeMille and then I just think about one of the books and what I like about it. I am currently reading WildFire and I like the main character of the story, John Corey. So I think, "I like John Corey. I like his personality. He has some good lines in the book, etc."

After a couple of minutes, I FEEL BETTER...it really works.

Or, just have an attitude of gratitude. No matter what problems you may be facing, you always have something to be grateful for.

I start my day (before I even get out of bed) saying Thank You silently to myself for all the good things in my life. "Thank you for my family, thank you for my health, thank you that I have roof over my head, etc."

Yes. When I am depressed, I am sometimes afraid to drive because I feel that I am going to have a car accident. After two days in bed, I make myself get up start my day.
