Anesthesia involves a variety of drugs. No rum involved. (Alcohol can have anesthetic properties, but it's a sloppy anesthetic. We have much better drugs)

The gases that keep you asleep are halogenated ethers. They are chemically altered forms of ether that work better and don't explode.

We also use a variety of narcotics, benzodiazepines (drugs related to Valium), hypnotics (like propofol - they get you off to sleep quickly), drugs to paralyze your muscles, numbing medicines, and many different drugs to control blood pressure and heart rate. We have some drugs that reverse the effects of other drugs.

Really, we have drawers full of different drugs. Most patients probably get 5-10 different medications in a typical anesthetic. Complicated cases could be double that.

Depends. Most are plant based (ether, morphine derivatives, etc.). Locals may even be the raw plant leaves. You just need something that numbs the nerves.

Rum/Alcohol is a last choice for an anesthesia

However, rumors have it that the best anethesia is listening to tapes of political speeches.
