there are 27 countries in the world that are on the VWP ( visa waiver program) UK included. so u can go the states without getting a visa beforehand, as long as u have a machine readable passport, which im sure u do, it has have all those numbers on the bottom, so they can scan in on the machine. anyways but about working in the states, you might want to check the US DEPARTMENT OF STATE website for details, its pretty informative and up to date with all the new laws. let me tell u a lil secret, u can work in the states without papers anyways, all the mexicans do, im sure u can too. Some countries are exempt from obtaining visitor visas for USA, but citizens of all other countries need to apply for a work visa if employment is their reason for entering to USA.
