i love the way cars look w/o the front license plate mounted. except for using it as a bumper guard when you park, i see no reason to have it mounted. so my q is .....

how much is a 'fix-it' ticket for not having your front license plate mounted?
how many times can you get away w/ it before you're hauled off to jail?

In California you're charged $10 provided you can show proof you have fixed the problem. Without the proof, you will be charged the full amount of the ticket.

You're not risking jail. You're risking having your car impounded.

You need to say where you are before the question can be answered in detail - it varies by place. If you keep getting tickets, and you pay, you won't get hauled off -- but if it is a "fix-it" ticket, and you don't fix it, the fine can be quite high.

PS - the reason to have a front license plate is the same as the reasons to have a rear -- to identify your car. If your car is stolen, for example, and a cop sees it only from the froint, you'd just as soon have the cop be able to run your plates and get it back for you. And the state worries about hit and runs and other things, and wants to be able to identify your car not only from one angle. Seems reasonable to me.

In certain places, its ok to not have the plate on the front bumper, however, you may have to put it on your dashboard and pretend that you lost the plate bolts.

You won't be hauled off to jail, but repeated offensives will probably result in fines whether you fix it or not.
