It would be nice for you to go to the prom with him, but that is a lot to ask.

People with autism are often unable to pick up on even to most blatent hints, so you will need to be blunt. The challenge is to be blunt but kind. And it is essential to be kind because it isn't his fault.

I would advise you to stay friend with him but give him clear boundries. Tell him how often to call. Go out to lunch with him but try to get someone else to go along. He needs someone to help him navigate the strange social waters of society. It might be interesting to see his perspective. Things you take for granted may seem odd when you see them through his eyes. It may be a bit of a drag at first, but years later you will be grateful for the experience.

If you can't get the courage to do any of that, talk with his teacher (assuming he has a special ed teacher). She can help you know what to say, or (if you don't have the courage to talk with him at all) will talk with him for you.

But if you don't want to hurt his feelings, consider the possibility that hearing it from the teacher might be the most painful way to let him know. The teacher will have the best insight on that.

Good luck.

Do you not want to go just because he is autistic? If you go with him, at least you know you will be dealing with a real person who doesn't care about fitting in and who will probably be honest with you (these are things you will seek later in life when you find out how important they are). You might be passing up getting to know a very interesting person.
