Hello, my parents recently took their female lab, Roxy in to have an urgent Hysterectomy. She apparently had a very dangerous infection, Pyometra. Her uterus was filled up with pus. Roxy is about 7 to 9 years old, she had never been spayed and had babies once 3 years ago. Well my mother just called to tell me that she had been worried because Roxy has been so tired and lethargic lately, usually she is hyper and curious. She called the vet and told him that she had been giving Roxy 500 mg. of Hydrocodone, a generic brand of Vicadin, twice a day!!! I had no idea. She was just trying to help Roxy, she thought it was ok. The vet told her that she has basically been poisoning Roxy!
Does anyone know if Roxy could be in serious danger after just 4 or 5 days of this??

Never, ever give a dog medication without talking to your vet first. Many medications that we can take are not safe for dogs.

There are things the vet can do to help with Tylenol toxicity in dogs. As for the dosage of Vicodin the dog was given, I don't have any toxic dosages on hand, but you can find out through the Poison Control Center. Since your dog is already at the vet, they probably have the situation under control though.

A pyometra is a VERY serious illness. The infection can quickly become systemic. Your dog is fighting two battles right now... a toxicity to medicine AND an infection.

Good luck to you, and I hope your dog feels better soon!

Well, yeah, Roxy's in a lot of danger. Between the infection and the poisoning, it's a wonder she's not dead.
That poor dog hasn't had much of a chance all around, between the not being spayed and the doping, yeah, your parents might mean well but they sure have a lot to learn about dogs.
I hope Roxy pulls through, but it doesn't look good and I am sorry for that. None of what has happened to her was her fault.

First of all hydrocodone comes in 5---7.5----10 mg tablets. The 500mg is the amount of tylenol in it. Of course that would poison her. You are very lucky she is alive. Why people are so stupid is beyond me.And then you write this still not knowing what you are talking about. Both the ingredients are listed on the label and if read correctly it's pretty easy to see which is which. And why would someone especially give a narcotic to an already lethargic dog, thats just common sense.Do you even know that it is a federal felony to give a narcotic to anyone other than to who it was prescribed.

Yes, that is a very serious problem, especially since she has to have surgery.

Effects seen in liver, red blood cells and hemoglobin (protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen)
Toxic effects include:
liver damage
anemia (low red blood cells in the bloodstream)
methemoglobinemia (abnormal hemoglobin which has a decreased ability to carry oxygen in the bloodstream)
Toxic dose:
Cats – 50 milligrams per kilogram body weight
Dogs – 150 milligrams per kilogram body weight

I don't know about the medication, but as long as she has stopped it in time and she's had the surgery, most cases of pyometra get cured. Good luck to Roxy!

yes, she could be. Why do people think they can just medicate their dogs with whatever they want. that is a very frustrating part of being involved in veterinary medicine

Yes, she could be in serious trouble...People should NEVER, EVER self medicate their pets!!! Most times they do far more harm then they do good.
