I just went through this~ the first signs are obviously pain and redness, but if there is swelling most likely it is infected. You should really go to the dentist.
I waited too long to get mine looked at and it got really swollen~ it looked like I had a golf ball on the side of my chin.

If is red and in pain big as golf ball in your mouth time to go dentist in mean time use warm and salt it will bring it down it worked for me good luck

If it a cut...and infection will look yellow or green...
