If you need to ask it is definitely too big a job for you.
A competent "amateur" mechanic should be able to do it.

If you have noisy "tappets" you will in all probability need to replace the Camshaft and the Followers (tappets) and the oil spray bar, these used to be sold as a kit ,and just to be on the safe side replace the cam belt at the same time.
If you get a garage to do it,it could end up costing more than the car's worth

If it's a single overhead cam, and you mean the tappets need adjusting and not the valves need replacing, you'll need a special spanner if it's the tappets, if you have not got it, it would be advisable to go to local garage as it wouldn't cost a lot. If it's that the valves need replacing, it isn't worth doing, as it is a BIG job and would cost a LOT of money..

if you have/get a haynes manual for the car in question, follow it carefully you should have no problems. But i seem to remember some ford engines had hydraulic lifters that eliminated any manual adjustments. If this is the case it will need a camshaft kit.

It's more fiddly than big. You'll need the high-tech special tool, which is basically a bent 17mm spanner.
