I've got 2 blue heeler pups...9 weeks old and 11 weeks old. They both know how to sit and "give five" (aka "shake"). They both learned it quickly. What are some other tricks and how are they taught?

Congrats on your pups!

Consider things they already do...like if they bark, every time they bark...say the same word. Like "SPEAK!" Then if they hear you say SPEAK every time they bark, they will associate the two, and soon you can teach them to bark/speak on command..and to NOT bark on command! NO SPEAK!

Also, unless it would be a pain, lol...put a bell on your door where they go to go out. When you ring the bell, right before you leave to go potty, they will learn to associate the two. Pretty soon, the pups will ring the bell when they have to go out. Be careful to NOT ring the bell for outside PLAY times, and to never play when it's potty time.

Also, play dead! Get them to roll onto their backs for a belly rub! When the do this, say whatever...like I say PLAY DEAD every time I rub my yorkie's belly. Now he rolls over and plays dead when I say play dead. But you could be funny with this and rather than saying play dead, say something like "What do we think of men?" Or "Oh, no! Grandma is coming!" LOL

Good luck with your doggies!

Join the UKC! Obedience trials are so much fun! The UKC Nationals are coming up in June or July. When you start out you need just need to teach your dog Sit Stay, Down Stay, Heel, and some other things. I've been in it two years with my dog, and we're already in Open. We need to qualify one more time. Go to UKC.com to find out how to join. I wrote instructions on how to teach your dog all the excercises and I'll be happy to help! I want to be a dog trainer when I get older! Email me! CCandDuke@Yahoo.com! Thank you so much for your question! You will absolutely love Obedience! If you do it the RIGHT way you'll have so much fun and your dog will be happier!

How about crawling when your puppy learns to lay down and roll over you teach them how to crawl by enticing them to crawl under a kitchen chair

I got in the habit of making my boxer sit and stay when we come back from a walk, so I'll walk in the house and he'll sit there until I tell him it's Okay to come in the house instead of just running in when I open the door. He does this on his own were ever we go now and everyone cant believe it because it seems like he's asking for permission to go in.

sit up and "beg"
put puppy in sit command hold treat over puppies nose and up high enough so it has to reach but not come out of sit position just enough for the front feet to come off the floor, give the command you want to use for the "begging" such as sit pretty, beg or sit up each time you do this, repeat the process several times
commando crawl or sneak
put puppy in lay down position, hold treat just in front of puppy but so it cant get it,get your puppy to "crawl" after your hand by still laying down, once again each time you do this trick repeat the command sneak or crawl
Jump through hoop or over stick
hold a hoop or yard stick in one hand and have puppy jump over the stick or through the hoop by following your other hand and treat

remember puppies have short attention spans so not to over do training or puppy will lose interest, also train one trick at a time so they don't get confused once they know one trick and have it down to a science move on to the next, just use your imagination and make up tricks and your own training methods they will catch on to what you are asking, you have two very smart puppies, this breed is one of the most intelligent...good luck and see you on the next PET STAR challenge

To go along with the paw trick i taught my dog "other." I say "paw" and she shakes, I say "other paw" and she puts the other paw up. I taught her by tapping the paw I wanted and pulling it up if she didn't respond. If they truely understand the "other" concept you can switch which paw they use several times.
