I met a Protestant minister who strongly believed that they do. He based it on the Bible verse regarding the "great cloud of witnesses" who watch over us, a verse that Catholics often cite to support the doctrine of the communion of saints.

I'm a heathen, and I count as a believer. So yes, I think the line of my ancestors back to the beginning, when the first spiritual proto-humans discovered and honored the Gods, are somehow there in spirit, some of them lost, some of them under another face, some of them in the holy halls of the Gods themselves, taking care of their descendants. Why should your mother be any different? She's deceased and in the line of your ancestors, right? I hope that, although non bible-centric, my answer gives you some comfort at the thought of relatives passing away. Yeah, they are there and they care. The Aesir bless you. P.S. To all Atheists or fundie Christians that would tell her her ancestors don't care for her anymore... As we can't really know (i believe they do, but I'm not 100% sure), what need do you have for hurting the asker? She's being nice, why don't you shut up if you can't confort her? (well, perhaps I get angry at this because I want to be a priest and value kind, warm spiritual counseling, but I think harassing the asker at that moment is needlessly cruel and mean-spirited)

no because this is what the Bible says

Ecclesiastes 9:5-6..........For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten. Also, their love and their hate and their jealousy have already perished, and they have no portion anymore to time indefinite in anything that has to be done under the sun.

I hope not. The last thing I want is for my loved ones to have to worry about how I am doing. Heaven is not a place where you are jockeying for position to view the lives of those left on earth. Heaven is filled with peace that passes all understanding.

Not particularly.

=)

but that may be because the things that people do make them look less like human beings and more like animals. Can you imagine knowing that your grandma is looking down at you at every moment? Even the best of us are guilty of indulging ourselves for simple reason of selfish pleasure. Eating more than we need, having sex, doing things we know are not good for ourselves or our bodies. If we knew without doubt that all others who came before us were watching us, the world would be quite different. Wouldn't it?

Yes. I've heard a lot of stories when someone is dying that their dead relative comes to guide them to the after-life. At least that's what happened to my Grandpa.

I believe that they have a vested interest in us and in life loved us dearly so of course more so in death; the utlimate hand is always God, but I am sure that there is a twinkle in their eye to pour their good wishes and love over us until we meet again.

I believe that when you die you either go to heaven or hell. You don't watch over anyone that is what God and his angels do. You go to heaven if you ask the Lord to be your savoir. If you don't do that you go to hell, no matter how good you were.

I feel that they are always with us to protect us especially if something bad is going to happen. Death is the end of living on earth but nthe beginning of living for eternity or being reincarnated.

The bible says we have gaurdian angels to watch over us.
