More likely for Canada to absorb some of the current nothern states of the U.S.

Only one province in Canada is capable of functioning without federal support - Ontario. The rest are all a disaster.

We don't want Canada - nice people, good scenery, great restaurants, but the last thing we need is a large territory that will cost even MORE money.

It all depends. If Quebec gains seperation, the chance is there that a province might align itself with the US but not as a full state right from the start. More then likely you will see seperate countries spin off from Canada based on regional sentiment. If Quebec doesn't leave, the only thing that would cause another province to leave is if Ottawa dictates to Alberta on oil and gas, Alberta will leave to protect its economy.
