I asked a nurse at the hospital when I was there if an enema would cause me to go into labor and she said that its very doubtful. I know it has worked for some people, but if it doesn't actually send me into labor..do you think it would help to dilate or ripen my cervix?

No. The reason some people do an enema in early labor is because they are afraid of pooping while pushing.

Enemas are for your bowels. There is nothing about your bowels that will "ripen" your cervix- totally different anatomy. Your baby will come when it is ready. Try walking regularly.
Sometimes bad things happen when we mess with mother nature- it would be a sad thing knowing that it could have been prevented by letting nature (or the professionals) take its course.

When you are pregnant and going into labor they give you a fleet enema to keep you from sh***** yourself when you push. Having an enema does not help your cervix to dilate any faster.

The only thing it might do is help you progress more as in make the contractions if you are having any stronger but it wont dilate you more. But I would wait until your in the hospital and they give you one because you can become dehydrated.

It could cause contractions if you used something really irritating but that will not necessarily dilate your cervix or lead to real labour.

As my OB/GYN told me when I was overdue, what MIGHT help is having sex (considering that your pregnancy is uncomplicated and you were allowed to have sex). Something in the male semen helps thinning the cervix.
I went into labor before we tried that :))
