I am putting in oak treads and risers in a boxed stairway. How much space do I leave on each end for expansion and also what do I use for moulding to cover up the spaces on the ends

For a 3/4" solid oak stair tread leave a 1/4" expansion gap to be covered by 1/4 round or base board.

Good luck with your project

About the width of
a small nail. The
finish work on the
sides will cover it.

IF YOU PUT YOUR TREADS ON FIRST YOU REALLY CANT GET IN TROUBLE, YOUR SKIRT BOARD WILL COVER THE WALL SIDE AND YOUR RISOR WILL COVER THE OTHER. JUST KNOW THE SIZE OF YOUR MATERIAL. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO PUTTY YOUR NAIL HOLES.
