I think that they are certainly one of the biggest contributers in spurring along their followers to commit suicide with promises of lots of virgins in the afterlife.

It makes you wonder if it was that good, why don't the clerics go and fight?

You've apparently answered your first question. As to your second question; I don't think our culture has a great deal to do with it. There are things that you do simply because you're a human being. When you see someone else being mistreated, you instinctively want to help that person. That's true individually and nationally.
