Oh too funny! :)...Yes, my German Shepherd only understands German; my Chihuahua only understands Spanish; my Yorkie only understands someone with a Yorkshire accent..however, my cats have their own language..i think they made it up.

If they are trained in German, they do.
If they're trained in French, they understand that. I know of two German shepherds that were trained in Hindi.
In short, dogs understand the language they're trained in and that's spoken around them. Just like humans. If you have a human baby that's of German parents and it's being raised somewhere that only English is spoken, then the baby's not going to understand German just because it is a German.

If they are trained by someone speaking German, then they understand that language. Many police dogs are now being trained in German, so they can't be confused by people trying to interfere with them.

If they live in Germany they do because they're taught commands in German. Same goes for whatever language is native to where a dog lives.
I knew a woman in the US that trained her Rotts in German (She was originally from Germany) so that no one else could give them commands besides the family.

Dogs do not naturally understand human languages... they can learn whatever you speak to them though... but just because they are a german breed does not mean they understand german any better than any other dog.
Silly silly.

Just like a baby human - animals can be taught to recognize whatever language they are exposed to. However, they will only understand a few words, and only if you repeat them many times.
I met a police dog who understood Dutch (because that is where he grew up) and the American trainer who inherited him had to learn 15 words of Dutch to get him to work as a police dog here.

If that is how they are trained, yes.
Most service dogs trained in the US are trained in German. I'm guessing so a suspect can't yell a command.

Oh, I don't know. I had a German Shepherd one time. Just to see if he understood German, I shouted " Atchung!" He sat up on his hind legs and saluted me.

No, nor do they understand English. They assimilate commands with an action which is learned through training. If you spoke martian to them during training they would learn what action is expected with each sound. That is why dogs respond to whistles, shouts, or signals.
