I saw a show recently about a "dragon scale" style body armor that stopped multiple close range shots from M16, AK47 and a 9mm submachine gun, with armor piercing rounds. Even direct contact detonation of a fragmentation grenade did not penetrate it (wearer would still most likely be dead, though, but not from shrapnel).

So, it's pretty good.

Defending against a Ak 47 (7.62 round) the standard military vest (with sappy plates) can withstand three shots within a 6 inch radius. Past that and the bullets will go through the sappy plates. The round will go right through the kevlar of the vest.

unless youve got the ceramic laminate oxide plates in it wont stop a round from an ak or an m16. It might stop a round from an mp5 as thats only a low velocity round. Check the manufacturers specs. there is a guy in the US who demonstrates the stopping power of his vests by shooting himself point blank with a .357 magnum while he is wearing one

Clavier armor is pretty effective at stoping a .45 round from 30 meters and automatics to a lesser extent. The military is also developing an new armor, code named Dragonskin, that will me much more effective then the current armors. I wouldn't bet my life on any type of body armor anymore though, too many high powered weapons out there now-a-days.

It depends on the manufacturer, the type of material, whether Kevlar, or the extremes for which the vest was designed, in the case of military applications, vest are designed with life-saving blasts from ied's or hand thrown grenades. For police applications, kevlar is used with bullet-stopping advantages since there are not many suicide bombers in the US or Canada.

Normal kevlar vests work great against Pistol ammo, but not very good against high energy, small rnd bullets that assault rifles used. They are developing a lot of new stuff that is being deployed as fast as they are manufactured.

The most modern vest named 'Dragon Skin' will stop multiple rounds (a full clip) from any of those you mentioned. And is better at spreading the force of impact over a larger area.

Can't say I've tested this, but it does depend on what distance you are talking about.

There is a vast difference between taking a bullet from 10 feet and 1,000 feet.

Most vests will stop handgun rounds but have only varying degrees of success with assault rifle rounds. The is no body armor anywhere that will stop a .50cal. round.
