You should go to to Wal-Mart or Sam's Club either one. I have had their cakes and they are the best I have tasted. I was suprised when I heard they were from Wal-MArt. If I remember right a full sheet cake is like $13-15. So you could do your small "wedding cake" and then just have the sheet cakes in the back to be cut up for your guests. I can't remember exactly but I know they were the cheapest.

Every grocery store bakery does tiered or stacked (your choice) wedding cakes. The best wedding cakes I've ever eaten came from the grocery.

However do a taste test before you decide. You can't do a typical tasting like you would at a specialty bakery since you would have to buy a small cake and take it home to try. But some bakeries just make bad cakes. For example, I personally will not buy anything from the bakery dept at Safeway because I have yet to get anything from them that isn't dry and tasteless. Also the cake/icing combos they use don't go together. Same with Costco, strange flavor combos and dry cakes, at least in my experience. But the cakes from the Walmart bakery are the best I have ever had, and I have eaten a ton of cake in my life to be able to discern good from bad. You have to decide which grocery bakery you like best and go from there.

The only disadvantage to the grocery is you have to have someone pick up the cake and then assemble it at the reception site. Most people though don't have any knowledge or expertise on how to assemble a cake so that it doesn't fall over.

get a talented friend to help you, then its just the cost of materials. I made my friends wedding cake (a three tired cake) and it turned out great. I think we spent maybe $100 in materials. But yes some grocery stores will make them.

Or get a small cake from a baker that feeds maybe half your guests and then have the baker make a sheet cake in the same flavor and you can save a bundle.

Costco, Wal-mart, Harris Teeter are three good ones.

I'm not a big cake eater so my hubby and I had Krispy Kreme donuts for our wedding "cake". A nice platter and the donuts in a circle on the platter, we even had come bavarian creame filled ones that were iced to "look" like a cake. It was great and every one loved it. Something different.

They make great cakes at Albertsons. I don't know what state you are from, but we have them here in Oklahoma. I recently went to a wedding and the wedding cake was from there. It was really really good!

As many have said, try your local supercenter with a bakery or grocery bakery. If you purchase a plain 2-4 tier cake, you can add additional items yourself (i.e. cake topper, flowers or rose petals, etc.)

Search the web for cakes to use as your decorative inspiration.
