There is a wonderful movie called "Iron Will" and it's a fictionalized look at the beginning of the Iditarod race in Alaska in the last century. It's about a young boy, named Will, who must save the family's farm business after his dad dies, so he enters the race for the prize money. He inherits his dad's dog team but he must win over the lead dog. He battles other unscrupulous racers (like the evil Sweede) and most of all the big newspaper magnate who bets money on his favorite racer. Thanks to an eager journalist, Will becomes the beloved underdog and all America cheers for him. It's an all around exciting movie, without using profanity. I found that everytime I showed this movie, from young to adult, the students get so involved in it and cheer for Will and in the end they feel great. You can also incorporate it into a theme unit on Alaska, the Iditarod, winter sports, the ethics of winning....It's a regular length movie, but it can be divided, especially at exciting points where the students can try to predict outcomes and are "hooked" to watch the rest of it. It's a great movie
