Which one is better at what?
The Marlin is a fine .22 if you like the style etc.
I prefer the Ruger 10/22 because it has so many available aftermarket parts for it.
No it isn't available in .223 no matter what CSI: Miami says! :-)~
I own several 10/22's and every one of them will shoot under 1/2" groups with Winchester or Remington cheap ammo. Some will shoot better than that but I have to use the Wolf Target ammo for those.
They shoot great, are very reliable and don't cost an arm and a leg.
I have included a link below to a great website with a forum that is dedicated to rimfires. :-)

I'm not a big fan of either, but I have owned a Ruger in the past and they are better. Marlin should really compete by offering a "premium" model 60. Ruger has a couple of nicer 10/22s (sporter model and target model) and Marlin will not step up to the plate and offer competition. And their lever-action .22(39A?) is just way too expensive for the average consumer. Ruger and Remington, by the way, are the top two gun manufactrurers in the USA-for a reason. Marlin is like Mossberg.

I prefer the Ruger, for reasons stated above...
My all time fav sporting semi-auto .22 LR is the Weatherby XXII
Someone mentioned Remington - remember the Remington "Nylon 66" the darn thing looked like something from Mattel but it would shoot all day and all night...

I have a brother with the former and bought the latter for one of my kids as a better choice, but my favorite 22 autoloader is a Winchester model 63, and I think there's a Brazilian copy available.

having owned both i have a great affection for the ruger
there are countless....endless accessories for the ruger

if you want high-cap magazines, go for the 10-22
Both are good though.
