I think you are talking to the wrong people. Talk to your girlfriend about it and see what she thinks of onyx. I personally thing a black stone is inappropriate, as black is usually associated with dark and doomed things. You could however use her birthstone or a ruby. But to be honest, girls want diamonds so it looks like an engagement ring, not just a casual gift.

While Onyx is gorgeous you should really consider getting a traditional diamond. However, most people now-a-days aren't very traditional with their rings. For instance my fiance and I went and looked at rings together as a couple rather than him picking it out himself. A lot of couples are doing this to make sure that the girl is happy with what she gets.
Also, a lot of engagement rings have diamonds in the center but then they have other stones around the diamond or on the side. Rings are also more common now in white gold or platinum rather than the traditional yellow gold.
My ring isn't traditional because it has a twist in the band and then when I get my wedding ring it has a matching twist so it interlocks together.
I think for your case if you really want to pick the ring out yourself get a ring with the traditional diamond in the center, maybe some onyx chips on the side of it and then see about getting an onyx pendant necklace to match. I think that would be really beautiful.
If your still unsure ask some of her friends what they think she would like.

There is no set law that says an engagement ring must be a diamond. Many women nowadays choose other stones. An onyx ring sounds like it would like rather nice. Make sure this is ok with your intended and choose one that will look well with the wedding band. My advice is to visit a jeweler that can design a matching set with the onyx as the primary stone.

I think it's great that you want to try something different. One thing I would look into though is how durable an onyx is. For example...a sapphire or garnet mark (scuff) easily, or an opal can crack. I think an onyx would be gorgeous in one of those new steel or titanium settings as well - do not set it in yellow gold -it would look gross. I'm just not sure whether a black stone is appropriate as an engagement ring ...talk to a jeweller.
You could always incorporate diamonds into an eternity wedding band.

It depends, does your girlfriend actually like onyx? If not, I wouldn't get her onyx. Has she in talking or hints expressed what type of jewelry she is into, as far as engagement jewerly? If she mentions things like 'my friend received the most amazing platinum and diamond wedding ring, was so beautiful, wish I had that, blah blah' theres an idea, but if she open to being different then go for it. My sister in laws wedding ring is an emerald gemstone set in yellow gold with 2 small diamonds on either side, thats her style. So it varies woman to woman. good luck!

She's either concerned with it being Tiffany's or concerned with the size. If she wants that "name" then you are doing great. If she wants size...well........unfortunately, I can't imagine she will be thrilled. Then again, you are proposing. That may be all that matters. But, I can assure you, platinum was a dumb choice. She'll want a new updated ring in 10 years anyway, and that's long before it being platinum will matter. Try buying a diamond elsewhere and getting it set at Tiffany's. Best of both worlds, as I can imagine buying even a 0.39 carat diamond at Tiffany is insanely expensive. Good luck and congrats on making such a big committment. Hopefully, she's happy no matter what because she has you.

No offense to you, but I hate onyx. I would be disappointed with that choice. What does your girlfriend think of onyx? If she has mentioned that she likes it, or actually has other onyx pieces, it might be o.k. If it's just something you like, maybe you could incorporate it into your wedding ring, but get her something she likes. A non-traditional stone is fine, as long as it's something your girlfriend likes, but diamonds are the safer way to go. Good luck.

i actually told my bf when he proposes i rather not have a diamond ( i actually really like sapphires) so i love that you are thinking of stepping out of tradition. If she seems like someone that also likes to break out of the mold and do things differently I would say go for it.
i would maybe find out if onyx is a stone she likes :)
i would think that is awesome. after all its not so much about the ring..but what the ring symbolizes. GOOD LUCK!

Get her a diamond.
EVERY girl wants a diamond.
I don't care how cheap or expensive onyx is, I just would never look at is as an 'engagement ring'.
She might say she likes it, but really hate it. Why make her disappointed?? Don't even bother, save up some money and buy a nice rock..at least half carat diamond.

I like the originality of this idea, but you really need to enquire as to whether your g/f like onyx and how she would feel if it was not a diamond. My ring is not diamonds, but then my b/f knew that I don't like them, so he would never have bought me one, you need to work with your g/f's tastes as well as your own. Dark stones are beautiful, if it must be dark would you consider a sapphire? Very deep midnight navy blue would look stunning.
