The first two answers are correct with one exception: Every intact female dog goes through a hormonal false pregnancy after every heat. Its not a disease really. Those of us with prefomance dogs are quite familur with the sad fact that our post heat females can not preform as well for two months (sigh). Some dogs react more strongly to the hormones developing milk & mothering stuffed toys, others dont and it may be invisable for a pet dog. Frequently the behavior is the same for every heat of an individual female.

PS if it looks like she has a watermelon in there its probably the real deal......

Yes, it is possible. False pregnancies can occur when a female dog fails to go out of her heat cycles correctly. Her body believes it is pregnant due a hormonal imbalance, even though she has not been bred. False pregnancy occurs 60-80 days after she was in heat, about the time she would give birth if she had been bred. She may have some abdominal swelling and/or engorgement of the mammary glands which can be painful. In some cases the she may actually produce milk. There are generally no long term problems associated with this and it will correct itself with her next heat cycle.
If you do not plan to breed your dog, you should spay her. This is healthier for her and will eliminate any further possibility of either real or false pregnancy.

If you are not positive that she has not been bred, take her to the vet to get her checked out. False pregnancies are not terribly common and would not be a safe thing to hope for if you think she could be pregnant.

Your second guess is more correct. False pregancies occur after a b itch's heat cycle. She will get mammary development, become very touchy around other dogs, and often look for places to "den" and whelp her "puppies". These "puppies" can be invisible, or some females will gather up their toys and use them as surrogate puppies.

Caused by a hormonal imbalance. Most easily fixed by spaying the female (which would also eliminate your chances of unwanted puppies!).

answers 1 and 3 are correct. my shih tzu went thru this and i could have swore she was pregnant, other than the fact that she is never alone and i knew she hadn't been around any males. she had one toy that she would keep in her mouth constantly, and she would nest in odd places--closet, behind the toilet--was very grumpy. if you're sure she's not pregnant, just be careful with her. don't try to move her from her nesting spot and be patient. my dog did this for probably about 3 weeks to a month.
