Your cat does this because cats prefer their drinking water to be flowing. It's very common, and can be annoying. He probably tries to drink the water that is running onto the floor. I would buy a drinking fountain for your cat (yes, they make these and they are fairly cheap. ) I like the delux fresh flow fountain. Or try getting a large stainless steel bowl for him to drink from, they like these better than plastic.

It is in the nature of cats to scratch the ground before they take a drink of water and that is why the water bowl is tipped over.

My cats do this as well. I think they are just playing in the liquid.
I suggest investing in cups with lids. And try a fountain water dish. Make sure you get one that either screws in or latches in place. I bought one that slid in place, and they still managed to knock it off.

my cat did that to me..
one day i was innocently eating some cereal and he came up put his paws on the side of the bowl tipping my cereal into my lap
i'm not quite sure why he does that..
my other cat she would tip and knock over her water dish if her food dish did not have an level of food to her liking
she doens't do that much anymore as i make her drink out of the toilet

My cats do that to their water dish to tell us they want a new one or they want it to be cleaned. They do that to other things too and we aren't sure why. We try not to leave liquid sitting for too long and certainly not erched in a fun spot. Cats can be mischievous and this might just be fun for them, it would be kinda fun to watch the chaos and cleanup ensue.

Sounds like it is behavioral and nothing to worry about. From the previous answers even including mine they just simply do it because they are curious. You might want to start keeping liquids out of his way. You might want to get him a heavier bowl. Question do you give him clean water? He might be telling you something to,,

My cat does this all the time.
Your cat is probably trying to play with the water (batting at it like a toy) he tips it over... and then runs away.

depending on his age, he could be still in his kitten stage... my cat is about 10 months and he does the same thing, but when he does it, he drinks it off the floor. your cat may just like to drink his liquids off the floor.
