I wouldn't advise using yarn. wicks are actually made of a good sturdy cotton. And they are designed specifically for the size of your candle. So if you are making a bigger candle you need to use a bigger (thicker) wick. I know, why can't anything just be easy... :o) When you go to the hobby store you can pick up one of those candle books. Or here is a website with info.

The wick material is not that expensive.
Go to the craft stores like Michael's.
I would think the yarn would be too soft and burn very fast.

I wouldn't use yarn. Those can be made of acrylic and produce toxic fumes when burned. Find a craft store that carries candle making supplies and use what they recommend.

You could, but it won't burn very well or for very long. I've tried. You can't really substitute anything else. Try buying wicks in bulk at a craft store. They're pretty cheap.

No don't use yarn, it has to be made of cotton. A cotton twine can be used.

You can use yarn but it will burn fast and be very smoky. something that is more dense would be better.
