One of the veterinarians that I worked for believed that dogs
(and cats alike) have no time perception...
I believe they DO.
Why else would my dogs (that I'm here all day with)
Start looking out the window and getting excited several minutes before the rest of the family gets home? :)
At the SAME time each day.
They KNOW its close to time for them to get here...

You are right. I have seen this happen with others - I have no pets.

There is a lady whose dog meets her at the bus stop every day and she does not even live very close to the stop. Yet each morning he walks with her, waits for her to leave and when she returns in the evening, he is there or else on the way to greet her.

I know he goes home when she gets on the bus, because I saw him do so after she left. It amazed me.

Another dog starts barking at the same time each day when his owner is supposed to drive up to the house. If anyone tries to stop him he keeps barking until the car shows up on the corner.

My dogs are the same way. They are on a schedule and the schedule rarely changes.

They know that I get up in the morning, make a pot of coffee, wait until enough is brewed for a cup, then both head to the back door where their leashes are and sit there, because they know the next step is going for a walk.

Of course they do but it is tied in with their physical needs. They know when it is time to eat or to get up in the morning to go out for a walk. Perhaps they are reading other signals such as the position of the sun or hearing your alarm but people judge the time by looking at the position of the sun so what is the difference?

They know about time just as do most animals. A crow knows if you have been near his nest too long.

you are totally right. when i take my dog home with me to visit my folks (a two hour drive) he knows exactly when we are getting into town and wakes up. He will sleep the entire time. I'm not braking or stopping yet, he just knows it's time to get out and see his grandma (his favorite part of the trip). I take him on shorter trips too. But he knows that if he's in the car for more than 20 minutes, it'll be two hours and dozes off. I think dogs pick up a lot more than people give them credit for.

I have always made it a point to let my dogs out to toilet every 2 hours. You can believe me when I tell you that they have a built-in 2-hour timer and will let me know if I let the time slip away.

Yes they do. Not as much as a more intelligent mammal, but they do. It is more like short time, normal time for you to be away, seems like forever so happy to see you(maybe because they are hungry) and I don't think they are coming back.

Dogs live in the moment. They associate different things with the amount of daylight, noises ,stomach rumblings etc....
