I am at work today but in the office downstairs they are painting and staining and it's really stinking up the whole building and frankly making me feel sick when I am already sensitive to fumes, I feel like a baby asking to go home but I can't sit here and get sick? What should I do?

Well I am still here, I have taken a walk and a drive but there are no windows to open unfortunately. I personally think they should just say let's go home, this is ridiculous, but I do love my job and don't want to look bad to my boss... There goes feeling great on Valentine's, All I wanna do is sleep now.

I'm surprised that the workers are doing this during regular working hours. Open all the windows. Is anyone else feeling ill? If so, call the board of health in your town and ask for guidance.

Some paint/stain materials can make you nauseous and give you a headache. Some specify to use in a well ventilated area like polyurethane.

If you feel too sick, go home.

Tell them that your allergic to paint fumes etc. Explain to them that continued contact with same is going to cause you become seriously sick and you will have to go to a doctor or hospital and they will be responsible for your medical bills and you will not be able to continue working until the work downstairs is done etc. So you would be better taking time off then the alternative.

Go in to the boss' office and sway on your feet and say "The fumes are making me really ill." Fall into a chair, rest for a moment and then say "I need to leave here now." Then go home.

Simply point it out to your supervisor and ask if there is a way to open windows (hopefully you're not around Boston, its freezing out) or have a half day off.
When it happened to me, I simply stated the fact and asked to leave for the day. They were understanding and I just made the hours on other days.

I would suggest talking and letting them know that the fumes are really bothering you. Ask them if there is somewhere else you can move or or anything they can do to acommodate you. If they are unable to then let them know that it is making ytou sick and you cannot stay.

Those conditions are hazardous to the health of workers. Tell the supervisor that you will file a complaint unless something is done to stop it.

TELL THEM YOU NEED TO GO HOME, BECAUSE THE FUMES ARE MAKING YOU SICK. RUB YOUR EYES UNTIL THEY GET PUFFY AND RED. GO HOME KICK BACK AND HAVE A COLD ONE AND WATCH THE SOAPS. ENJOY.
