the diaphragm spasms causing the lungs to quickly exhale.. usually in response to your throat or lungs needing to clear phlegm out of your system.

Instead of your diaphragm contracting slowly as it normally does for normal breathing, it does so quickly, moving air (as well as whatever might be in your lungs) out quickly.
