apparently, it is the pollen that is poisonus to domestic cats, if a cat brushes past a lilly the pollen sticks to the coat, then when the cat grooms itself the pollen gets ingested and the poison enters the system. there are leaflets available free from your local vet and the rspca, find the number in the phonebook under animal welfare organisations. I have six cats, 3 of wich are strays.

Lilies are extremely poisonous to cats and can be a potential cause of kidney (renal) failure in cats. The entire plant, leaves, stamen, pollen etc. are all poisonous. Symptoms of poisoning can occur within two hours and include vomiting, depression and lack of appetite. No matter how little of the plant has been eaten, or even if your cat has just washed pollen off it's coat, veterinary advice should be sought immediately as time is of the essence.
I remember there was an article about this in the Daily Mirror last year when someone's cat died within hours of washing pollen off it's coat. I gave the article to my local vet and even she didn't know how dangerous lillies are to cats. They now have this article pinned up on the wall in reception to make other cat owners aware.

LILLIES ARE VERY DANGEROUS. One petal can kill a cat-i'm not kidding. A vet i worked for has seen it happen. It is best to not even have them in the house if you own a cat.

The pollen is dodgy for cats and humans - it stains clothes if you get it on you, so imagine if it went in a cats eyes or throat - and you know how they love to play with flowers
