A look in the 1995 VW repair manuals shows.
10W-30 or 10W-40, VW recommends those weights for most areas.
If you live in a really cold state run 5W-30 in winter and 10W-40 in the summer.
If you live in a really hot place then 15W-40 year round.

Suprisingly enough the WALMART brand oil tested better then most big name oils.

For a car that old I wouldn't recommend spending the extra dollars on synthetic oils.

VW also recommends to change your oil and filter every 7500 miles.

Good luck, nice car

If you are going to keep the car long-term, here's a few hints(former VW owner, now have 911)

1. Techron(at Chevron) Bottle. Every 3 months, a small bottle(about 6-8 bucks), but FANTASTIC at cleaning the intake valves and intake runners. Put in bottle, fill up, and don't fill up until nearly empty.

2. Oil: 0W-40 Mobil 1(about 6 dollars a quart), or DELO 400 15W-40(about 7-8 dollars a gallon). Both are fantastic oils for YOUR car.

3. Manual tranny? Put in the 75W-90 Mobil 1 Syn...great for manuals

4. Automatic? Put in the Mobil 1 ATF(I put this in my benz)...wonderful for smother shifting, etc.

5. Sparkplugs; Get the Iridium NGK's, or standard NGK's. Bosch plugs are just OK, but the NGK's provide better response.

6. Your car will probably run best(and get best mileage) on 89 octane, not 91, and NOT 87(for lawnmowers, etc)...and stay AWAY from ARCO stations...PERIOD.
