What are those white things on the side of tree trunks that look like eyes? When I was in primary school they used to scare me senseless!

i would say that most likely you are looking at a branch scar. aplace where a brach was removes and the tree is growing to repair the wound and is leaving a round scar with a ridge of thicker bark around it, making it look like eyelids
