The choice of finger relates to traditions purportedly dating to classical times, from an early usage reportedly referring to the fourth finger of the left hand as containing the vena amoris or "vein of love". At least in part due to this tradition, it became acceptable to wear the wedding ring on this finger. By wearing rings on the fourth finger of their left hands, a married couple symbolically declares their eternal love for each other. This has now become a matter of tradition and etiquette.

The tradition of the 4th finger came from Egypt where they observed the veins and nerves running from this finger to the heart. While the left hand is traditional in many countries, some European countries wear wedding rings on the right hand.
In addition to the left hand being on the same side of the body as the heart, wedding rings were originally worn only by women in most countries. (As a sign of fidelity, and even ownership in many cultures.) The left side of the body is considered the "feminine" side in many traditions.

in the old days they believed there was a vein that ran from your "ring" finger to your heart. so men would tie their women up so they would not leave them, they would tie their ring finger specifically and then tie other parts of them to a bed or whatever in their house. after this was found to be cruel they started to simply tie a small rope around the ring so the woman would remember that she belonged to him. later it became a wedding ring b/c rings are an eternal circle, or neverending love.

Two answers. First, it's the hand closest to the heart and the ancients connected the two . Second, most pepole are right-handed and so jewelry worn on the left hand won't get the abuse and wear that it would on the right.

It was thought in ancient times that a vein went from the left hand directly to the heart.
Practically, most people are right-handed so it interferes less with handwork.

Because it is less likely to intefere with whatever you are doing with your hands (as 93% of people are right handed). Its another right-handed bias we left-handed people must deal with.
