as long as you go to a professional, and follow the correct aftercare the chances of having a problem with your tattoo are very slim. Allergies are not very common, its more bad aftercare issues. a good 95% of the people who think they have an infection simply have never had a tattoo and dont knw the difference. If you worry about any aftercare/problem go straight back to your artist. they are trained professionals who know exactly what is going on with your tattoo.
You also need to remember that allergies can be developed at any time. after your firsttattoo you may develop an allergy to a certain colour.
If you're worried about allergies stick to black work only its the least reactive colour. Reds and any UV ink is the type more suscpetible to complications. As for testing a spot you would have to test it A MONTH in advance, because even a few weeks after its healed you could have a reaction. With some of the uv inks reactions have occured even years after the tattoo was done. Also what can happen is your body will physically push the ink out so when it scabs the colour will come out and you will be left with a blank patch of skin under the scab when it comes off.

Not very, but it definitely can happen. The best thing would be to go to a dermatologist to have it examined, but if you can't or won't, you can try taking an antihistamine (like Claritin, generic loratadine, or Benadryl, generic diphenylhydramine HCl) and/or using a topical antihistamine or hydrocortisone cream.
There are two other possibilities: one is simply the normal irritation that occurs from the tattoo process. You can ease that with a simple skin cream.
But of greater concern is an infection, due to dirty needles or inks or post-process infection. That's far more serious. If you notice reddening or any spread or irritation from the site from the site, that's a real possibility. You should get yourself to a doctor right away.
Bottom line: you're best bet is to see a doctor, as there are serious possibilities.

it is more common to have allergic reactions to the aftercare products. This usually presents as itchy red bumps (look like pimples).
Allergic reaction to ink is probably more red, swollen & sore.
