why does windows 2003 server seem to function so much faster than xp?

Because it isn't bogged down with a lot of the visual enhancements. It annoys the bejeezus out of me that 2003 has the shutdown fade out, and that is about all it has.

It depends what you're doing with it. How much RAM the existing systems have. Disk fragmentation. Other optimizations.
