Psoriasis is a skin disease that is caused when cells overproduce that are created when skin is replaced many times per day. It is an irritating disease that often begins at joints of the body, but may spread all over. The sufferer itches, and white skin flakes off that resembles dandruff. It can cause fever, and the patient that has had it long-term can have arthritis from the problem. It is inherited; while some women can have it, it is generally passed on from the father's side. Men are more prone to get it because of this fact. There are many treatment options that, as the disease pogresses, are determined by a dermatologist. Some of these treatment options include but are not limited to: tar shampoo, special soap, ultra violet ray treatments from a special machine, and cortisone in limited amounts.Under FDA guidelines, the patient can be given cortisone every 6 months if the area is small(such as at the elbows). Larger areas cannot be done this way because of the makeup of cortisone. FYI: Sun exposure IN SMALL AMOUNTS is good for the patient, but be careful. Too much can cause skin cancer. My Dad has had psoriasis since the early 70's and doctors promoted sun, but told him to watch it. The last few yrs., after he had to have a small basil cell carsinoma removed that luckily, for him, turned out to be benign, he slowed down in the sun. He was an avid gardener. His indian heritage shown through when he did that! Good luck to the person(s) with the psoriasis. I hoped my info. helped.
