I was rasied Pentecostal, quite a few preachers on my fathers side of the family.
At 16 life started taking different courses for me. I could no longer believe because it was simply what I was told to do. I needed more. I poured over books, websites, yahoos own Atheist vs Chrisian chatroom. 6 months ago I would have told you I was Atheist. During this time I still sent my children to church as I could not give them an unbiased opinion on God. Two events brought me home so to speak, one while my ex husband was hospitalized, I was working alot of hours to make up for loss of income, around that not sleeping because I was at the hospital and taking care of our 3 kids. I wondered to myself how in the hell Im still standing? And clear blue as if someone was standing there talking to me I heard "It was then that I carried you" now, this for me, sure I was Atheist was not enough and more years passed by.

This past December I felt tired. Ever been that way so damn tired inside you just didnt want to get out of the bed. Tired of working my butt off, tired of raising my kids on my own, tired of the day to day battles that just was. So, I went to church. I chose Baptist. That first Sunday I wanted to cry. Coincidence or not, he preached on being at the end of your rope. He preached on god never leaving our side but us walking away from him. How we ignore the signs given to us (ie:the voice I heard years ago).
I left there feeling better than I had in a long time. Each Sunday that I have been able to make it (I pull 12hr night shifts) I have left with a question answered/understood and a little less weight off my shoulders. So... thats my own answer to my question. And for those christians trying to convince Atheists, all you can do is provide love and understanding because some people wont believe until something undeniable to them happens.

Please read my words carefully:
If you see footmark in the sand, you'll say that someone passed from here...
If you see a piece of dog sh*t on the ground, you'll say that a dog passed from here...
So what about the enormous universe, the sky, stars, planets, earth and all the beauty in it, doesn't it lead to that someone made it?!!!

Some people say that everything is created by itself after the big-bang... I won't ask you about what caused the big-bang, but I'll ask you a simple question:
If you take all the letters of the alphabet, multiples of them, and you threw them randomly on the floor. Do you expect (by a chance of one in infinity) to get a poem like shakespear's??!!

Can't you see how organized our universe is, the planets, the eco-system on earth, look even in your own body... Can you control your heart-beat? Can you control your breath while you're sleeping? Who stopped your eye-lashes from growing after reaching a certain length? Who told the baby turtles to move towards the sea and not to the earth after they come out of their eggs? Who taught the bird how to make nests?

My friend, think with your heart and brain. If you're still lost, think about the following:

Do you know how to play safe?
Your point:
If there's no God and you do all what you want in life, then nothing will happen to you after life. But if there was God and you were mistaken, then you'll blame yourself FOREVER...

Believer's point:
If there's God and I followed His commands in life, then I'll be in Heaven after life FOREVER. But if there was no God and we're mistaken, then nothing bad will happen to us after life...

Now you know how to play-safe, in case you're not convinced?

Can I say that you have the most postmodern question I've seen in awhile. I believe in God for several different reasons. As I examine outer space (which leaves me in awe) I think that someone had to have created that. I work in a hospital, so when I see the body working to fight against disease I know that this just didn't evolve. The jump that evolution asks you to take from non life to life is a pretty big one.

Now unto how I have felt God. This is not meant to be explained. Are we able to articulte love? It's hard to talk about the most intimate and life changing event. How could you describe a beautiful sunset to a person who has never had vision. It's impossible to put into words beauty. I'm sorry, all I can give is scientific analysis to why I believe in God. I suppose that I could talk about my own personal need to for salvation. Before I was a believer (I didn't really "accept" till I was about 20) I knew that something had gone terribly wrong. All the crap inside and nothing to do with it. I knew I needed something or someone to save me from me!!

It took a lot of things leading up to this but it was one night in December about 10 years ago when I was out back smoking a cigarette and just thinking to myself how all I wanted for Christmas was to finally know absolute truth. Right then I heard a voice in my head (yes I'm nuts) The words were. "Merry Christmas Lance." I knew who it was and what it meant. Those three words summed up over twenty miserable years of Atheism and many other things finally coming to a wonderful end. I have not heard any voices sense but it does not take but a half a second encounter with the living GOD to change you forever.
I pray that some day you will have an experience too.
Shalom!

I lost faith in '83 when my Sunday school teacher told about getting saved in a retreat on August 12.
My life has been intricate due to my disabilities: epilepsy, visual impairment and learning disaiblity. I was ocstracized, verbally psychologically and emotionally abused by family, schoolmates and teachers.
I was not accepted due to innate disabilities. I am a good person. I have not spent life hurting people. I have been prospering. If you saw me you were never guess that I was on the outside looking in for 12 years nor that I graduated with 1.4 GPR. I made a lot of F"s. People are amazed when they ask if I was an A student and I tell.
I feel that I did it myself. One has to help onesself before getting help from another.
I only want help getting a job.
I haven't prayed in at least 15 years.

In my life, which hasn't been very long, I have never had an kind of crisis where as to call upon or call forth God, although I do believe that there is a God. But in my own thoughts and spirituality, I find that I believe solely in God for the sake of knowing that one day my soul will come to find peace. Also I can't imagine looking out into the ocean or into the horizon and not have some kind of inkling to where all this came from. I, for one, could never accept the fact that this earth came to just be, as so many do. Though I do believe in God, I could not bring up undeniable evidence of his existence, for my faith in God is solely that, faith. Trusting in the unseen and unknown. But I can say one thing for certain, although my belief is based on just faith, isn't that base of so many other things? Faith that your car will turn on in the morning, faith that you will get to work on time, faith that you one day you will find happiness and peace?

Sorry, if this answer is not adequate, but more of a general rambling that has been echoing in my head for days.

Why do people believe in god? Because some people relate mysterious thing that happens to them or their family as miracle. They do not want to spend any effort to disprove it cause it won't make them feel any better. "Because it is" is not an answer.

Some people also relate tragedy as a punishment of sin. Although it is a great tool to teach people not to commit wrong behaviors, the standard of behavior is ever changing. It becomes a tool for a group of people to impose their rules on others. People need to be educated, not controlled.

There are many more reasons why people believe in god. Only when people can rely on themselves to learn the truth of human sufferings, people will still flock to religion for a save-haven or a scapegoat.

I had lived 24 of my my 25 years not caring of Christianity. I didn't care what Christians had to say it was all a joke really. My Mom died when I was 24. Before she did she told us GOD told her it was o.k. to let go. I had no idea what to make of it. I worked with a couple pastor's sons. And they took so much time answering any questions I had of religion. Soon I was asked to hang out with the church kids. Much to the ridicule of my boyfriend. Turns out they were all at least 5 years younger than me Didn't smoke, drink, or have sex. Me...two kids, unmarried, occasional drinker, non believer (yet). But these were the most accepting caring group of people I have ever been around. I don't trust easy. I don't let in easy. I keep didstance untill I know you are not someone who will backstab me. Which let's face is the norm anymore. But I felt instant ease. I was invited time and again to hang out. I was never ridiculed or put down for my lifstyle. They never pushed me to go to church. I choose to and it wasn't a decision I regret. I have never felt so much unconditional love from a group of people EVER!

Why do we believe in each other? Aren't we told that we are children of God? Did Jesus not say that? So, if that is true, then how can we NOT believe in our own parentage? Just as you believe in your mother and father, God is a real entity. Do you believe in the Queen of England? You've only seen her in photos, or on television, right? (Unless you've been lucky enough to actually meet her in person.) So what is the difference between the ruler of our Universe and the ruler of any nation? And for that "because he is" thing...that depends on your definition of "is!" (just paraphrasing a President!)

The testimonies that I have and the prayers that was answered. The voice that I hear and the way He's turned my life around and gave me joy. I was sooo mean and I hated the world and all in it. Now I just have the love of Christ in me, when people do mean things now it doesn't matter I pray for them. I couldn't always say that. Jesus Christ starts working on the inside of you. That's why I know I can never deny the power fo God. My life alone, let's me know He's there all the time.

LOGICAL CONCEPT OF GOD

My first question to the atheist will be: "What is the definition of God?" For a person to say there is no God, he should know what is the meaning of God. If I hold a book and say that ‘this is a pen’, for the opposite person to say, ‘it is not a pen’, he should know what is the definition of a pen, even if he does not know nor is able to recognise or identify the object I am holding in my hand. For him to say this is not a pen, he should at least know what a pen means. Similarly for an atheist to say ‘there is no God’, he should at least know the concept of God. His concept of God would be derived from the surroundings in which he lives. The god that a large number of people worship has got human qualities - therefore he does not believe in such a god. Similarly a Muslim too does not and should not believe in such false gods.

If a non-Muslim believes that Islam is a merciless religion with something to do with terrorism; a religion which does not give rights to women; a religion which contradicts science; in his limited sense that non-Muslim is correct to reject such Islam. The problem is he has a wrong picture of Islam. Even I reject such a false picture of Islam, but at the same time, it becomes my duty as a Muslim to present the correct picture of Islam to that non-Muslim i.e. Islam is a merciful religion, it gives equal rights to the women, it is not incompatible with logic, reason and science; if I present the correct facts about Islam, that non-Muslim may Inshallah accept Islam.

Similarly the atheist rejects the false gods and the duty of every Muslim is to present the correct concept of God which he shall Insha Allah not refuse.

(You may refer to my article, ‘Concept of God in Islam’, for more details)

THEORY OF PROBABILITY

In mathematics there is a theory known as ‘Theory of Probability’. If you have two options, out of which one is right, and one is wrong, the chances that you will chose the right one is half, i.e. one out of the two will be correct. You have 50% chances of being correct. Similarly if you toss a coin the chances that your guess will be correct is 50% (1 out of 2) i.e. 1/2. If you toss a coin the second time, the chances that you will be correct in the second toss is again 50% i.e. half. But the chances that you will be correct in both the tosses is half multiplied by half (1/2 x 1/2) which is equal to 1/4 i.e. 50% of 50% which is equal to 25%. If you toss a coin the third time, chances that you will be correct all three times is (1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2) that is 1/8 or 50% of 50% of 50% that is 12½%.

A dice has got six sides. If you throw a dice and guess any number between 1 to 6, the chances that your guess will be correct is 1/6. If you throw the dice the second time, the chances that your guess will be correct in both the throws is (1/6 x 1/6) which is equal to 1/36. If you throw the dice the third time, the chances that all your three guesses are correct is (1/6 x 1/6 x 1/6) is equal to 1/216 that is less than 0.5 %.

Let us apply this theory of probability to the Qur’an, and assume that a person has guessed all the information that is mentioned in the Qur’an which was unknown at that time. Let us discuss the probability of all the guesses being simultaneously correct.

At the time when the Qur’an was revealed, people thought the world was flat, there are several other options for the shape of the earth. It could be triangular, it could be quadrangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, heptagonal, octagonal, spherical, etc. Lets assume there are about 30 different options for the shape of the earth. The Qur’an rightly says it is spherical, if it was a guess the chances of the guess being correct is 1/30.

The light of the moon can be its own light or a reflected light. The Qur’an rightly says it is a reflected light. If it is a guess, the chances that it will be correct is 1/2 and the probability that both the guesses i.e the earth is spherical and the light of the moon is reflected light is 1/30 x 1/2 = 1/60.

Further, the Qur’an also mentions every living thing is made of water. Every living thing can be made up of either wood, stone, copper, aluminum, steel, silver, gold, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, oil, water, cement, concrete, etc. The options are say about 10,000. The Qur’an rightly says that everything is made up of water. If it is a guess, the chances that it will be correct is 1/10,000 and the probability of all the three guesses i.e. the earth is spherical, light of moon is reflected light and everything is created from water being correct is 1/30 x 1/2 x 1/10,000 = 1/60,000 which is equal to about .0017%.

The Qur’an speaks about hundreds of things that were not known to men at the time of its revelation. Only in three options the result is .0017%. I leave it upto you, to work out the probability if all the hundreds of the unknown facts were guesses, the chances of all of them being correct guesses simultaneously and there being not a single wrong guess. It is beyond human capacity to make all correct guesses without a single mistake, which itself is sufficient to prove to a logical person that the origin of the Qur’an is Divine.

SCIENCE IS ELIMINATING MODELS OF GOD BUT NOT GOD

Francis Bacon, the famous philosopher, has rightly said that a little knowledge of science makes man an atheist, but an in-depth study of science makes him a believer in God. Scientists today are eliminating models of God, but they are not eliminating God. If you translate this into Arabic, it is La illaha illal la, There is no god, (god with a small ‘g’ that is fake god) but God (with a capital ‘G’).

Surah Fussilat:

"Soon We will show them our signs in the (farthest) regions (of the earth), and in their own souls, until it becomes manifest to them that this is the Truth. Is it not enough that thy Lord doth witness all things?"

[Al-Quran 41:53]

becos He believed in me and never gave up on me. He has drawn me into His Kingdom and I have experienced His Grace, mercy & faithfulness. i am going thru a bad time in my marriage my husband is a non-believer and that is causing alot of strife and heartache. He has no fear of God or anyone and so does whatever he wants without caring about my or our kids feelings. but God has been with me constantly and shows me His love and has promised to deliver me. I see His work in progress on me, if I hadnt got God I dont know where or what I would have been throughout this trouble. He strengthens me daily, in many many ways. All i need to do is ask, and He answers.
