We recently purchased a new home and we have two empty bedrooms, one of which will be a nursery (soon, we hope!) and one of which will be a spare guest room until we need it for another child or family member.

We're trying to figure out where to put what furniture and paintings. (We don't want to have to replaster, paint, etc. too many times.) We'll leave the future nursery empty for now, and put the guest room furniture in the other room.

My mom told me that babies should be in a bright room, and that they'll adjust their sleeping to the bright, sunny space. (We have some nice roman blinds on the windows but they aren't "room darkening".) HOWEVER, an on-line article that I read stated that babies don't do well in a bright room, but prefer dark for sleeping.

Does anyone have any insight or ideas about which room to make my "nursery," the bright room (which faces South) or the "dark room" (which faces North)?
Thanks!

Well when I had by son he was born, he was detected with jaundice. A yellow color to his skin. Anyways when I took him to the Dr's after he got out of the hospital, his pediatrician said that sunlight would be good for him. He said that the sunlight helps the baby be in happy environment.

Go for the darker room, yes anybody baby included can learn to sleep in the daylight but it is not natural and interferes with the, oh my the name went right out of my head.... meletonin, production in your body. Low levels of melatonin directly relates to poor sleep. Baby is bright room equals baby to does not rest fully nor sleep properly - from a biological and medical point of view. If you go with the bright room, buy black out blinds/curtains.

I just moved into a new house as well, our bedrooms will be in the basement as the temp there is more constant and its quieter. I'm all about babise being able to sleep through anything but I like it dark and quiet when I sleep. The rooms only have small windows. There is the other many hours of the day for sunshine. How much sunlight are you getting with a blanket on you anyway?

Good Luck.

Nice bright room with room darkening shades, you can order them cut to size most places. I got mine for 10 dollars a piece through JCPenny. Get then wide enough that they cover about an inch over the window frame on either side to minimize the light that gets in through the crack. When the baby is brand new, they won't like glaring light, their eyes will still be too sensitive. I like the shades because they are so easy to just pull and roll up, and mine have lasted me alot longer than Venetian blinds ever would.

I would use the darkened room as the nursery. From my experience, I always had an easier time getting my babies to sleep in a darkened room. You could use the sunny room & use the darkening shades & dark curtain to dim the light so that your baby can enjoy both.

first, how warm does the sunny room get? Babies have a bit of trouble regulating their own temps for a little while. If you don't live in the deep south. I would suggest the sunny room with room darkening shades. Babies do like to sleep in the dark, ( don't you?) but the indirect sunlight is great for them too.

i chose our baby's room based on which room "felt" happy. i felt better about one more than the other, so that's the one i made the nursery.
it isn't a super bright room b/c it gets a good bit of shade from a big tree, but it gets a good bit of sunlight in the day, if i open the blinds. i love playing with him on the floor of his room with the blinds open and the other day it was warm enough to open a window (we're in SC). it was so peaceful to feel the sunshine and listen to the neighborhood "noise". we had a ball.

anyway...i would pick whichever one felt the best. probably the sunnier one b/c i like sunshine and i'd just put up blinds to take out a good bit of light in the daytime. however, you're baby will let you know if it's too sunny in his/her room. so, if your blinds aren't working, then she'll let you know b/c she won't sleep well in her "bright" room.

well, have fun decorating and take care.

FYI:
we decorated our nursery in a Winnie the Pooh theme and i love it, however, in hindsight, i wish i would have done something more transitional, like brown and bright blue and green so we wouldn't have to change much when he gets older....know what i mean??

With shades, curtains, etc. you can always make a room darker, but you can't make a dark room lighter!!! Go with the sunny room

I'd be more concerned about which room is warmer. Also, babies often have a bit of jaundice (yellowing) and laying them in a bit of sunlight is all that's needed in most cases.

I would go with the darker room. Unless, of course, you'd actually enjoy being woken up at the crack of dawn for the next several years. *wink*
