Sometimes at night when, I am in bed, I may rub my eyes and I notice I can "see" weird shapes or symetrical patterns, like a kaleidoscope.

Has anyone ever notice this? What is this phenomenia called? I have had this all of my life.

WOW -- that took a while to research!! But I FINALLY got it! I knew I'd heard the phrase before . . .

"A phosphene is the perception of light without light actually entering the eye, for instance caused by pressure applied to the closed eyes. "

That would be what you're looking at!! Thanks for the fun hunt.

I used to press on my eyes to see the different pattern when I was young. Me and my sister would do it at the same time and tell the different colors and shapes as they occurred.

I always thought all people had it. It's just from putting too much pressure on the eye area. And yes, it's difficult to stop especially when your eyes itch from allergies or colds.
