And for those Christians that answer, this is EXACTLY what you sound like when you ask Atheists why they celebrate Christmas. It's the same question.

Well, it's a pagan holiday (just like christianity is a pagan religion), and was initially a fertility celebration where the faithful would go to the cave of the wolf that suckled Remus and Romulus. They would sacrifice animals and spread the blood around to ensure fertility. Ahhh how romantic! It was around before Catholicism and St. Valentine just takes the credit. Kinda like Hallmark.

Godless atheist here, checking in again. Have an excellent V-Day!

Personally I don't really celebrate it, I anticipate it with loathing and then get through it.

The reason I participate in it, has a lot to do with my ability to keep the peace at my house. If I choose to do the morally right thing and only celebrate the life of Saint Valentine, rejecting social tradition, My wife will instill traditions from the middle ages. I will find myself on a rack begging for death.

Saint Valentines is the only time of year when we are forced to buy Roses at a 300% markup, buy $6 cards and fatten our significant others up with candy. It kills me.

I celebrate it just to reinforce to my loved ones how much I love them. I do not see Valentine's Day as a religious holiday at all, even if it is named after a saint. I don't care if atheists celebrate Christmas. There are MANY people who only celebrate the secular aspects of the holiday. Doesn't bother me at all.

I'm a Protestant-turned Catholic, and I have to say that I don't think I've ever as a Catholic attached much significance to V-Day. I believe people celebrate it more so as a secular holiday, much the same way as Christmas and Easter are celebrated by believers and non-believers alike. Just happens that way.

I hate when Christians ask me why I celebrate Christian religious holidays. I have family that are religious and like for me to be present and participate in activities, such as the egg hunt on Easter, baking cookies on Christmas...I could go on. I participate because my family loves me wants me there but they never ask me to pray with ot attend church with them out of respect for my belief. I like Valentines Day because I get to give everyone I love some commercially made chocolate and a funny card and go to dinner at my choice of restaurant without hearing my husband complain.

It has lost all religious significance and is a secular holiday promoted by flower, candy, and greeting card companies.

I worked for a florist in college and found out that there was another one...Sweetest Day or some garbage like that...another manufactured holiday...haven't heard of it since.

No sexual adventures with the girlfriend if I don't.

A full night of long, passionate, kinky, consenting premarital relations in exchange for a few chocolates and flowers? I'll take that trade!

They celebrate it's morals. Whereas atheists merely celebrate Christian holidays through vain repetition.
